Principal Investigator#
Ryan Abernathey#
Ryan is the principal investigator for the Ocean Transport Group. Besides all the science stuff described here, Ryan enjoys spending time with his young son, playing the fiddle, and spending time in the mountains.
Research Scientists#
Julius Busecke#
Julius is an assistant research scientist in the Climate Data Science Lab. He is an oceanographer interested in ocean physics and biogeochemistry using a variety of tools and datasets. In his freetime he enjoys photography, biking and climbing.
Dhruv Balwada#
Dhruv is an assistant research scientist in the Ocean Transport Group and is also associated with [M2LInES](https://m2lines.github.io). He studies stirring, mixing, and multi-scale interactions in the ocean, with the goal of improving our fundamental understanding and parameterizations of ocean turbulence. Dhruv enjoys being physically active; learning about cognitive science, human experience, and economics through podcasts and books; and sometimes tries to pursue fun and happiness.
Software Engineers#
Tom Nicholas#
Tom is a research software engineer in the Climate Data Science Lab. He is keen to improve the software tools available to all scientists. His interests include climate activism, playing his guitar, and gymnastics.
Charles Stern#
Charles is a Data Infrastructure Engineer working on Pangeo Forge. He is endlessly curious about elegant, open-source tools that help us understand our changing planet. Charles loves exploring in the mountains and tinkering with anything electronic or mechanical.
Postdocs#
Paige Martin#
Paige is a postdoc in the Climate Data Science Lab. She uses Python and open-source tools to study coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics, and is involved in many capacity sharing activities to promote open science. Paige also enjoys doing musical theater, aerial arts, and handstands.
Grad Students#
Shanice Bailey#
Shanice is a graduate student in the Ocean Transport Group. She currently studies bottom water formation and the internal dynamics of the Weddell Gyre. Shanice also enjoys boxing, hiking, and watching documentaries.
Christopher Dupuis#
Chris is a graduate student in the Ocean Transport Group, studying Applied Math. He is currently studying neural network methods for ocean surface currents. He also has extensive experience with PCA methods and scientific software development. Chris likes long road trips, exploring new places, bad horror movies, and underground music scenes.
Mochi#
Mochi is the Ocean Transport Group’s adorable mascot. He recently discovered his love of the ocean when visiting Woods Hole. Now, Mochi studies surface waves and the ducks that float on them. When he’s not in the water trying to collect duck samples or in the office working hard for treats, he loves to go for long car rides and be on the trails.
Undergrad Students#
Zoe Johnson#
Zoe is an undergraduate at Barnard College majoring in Physics. She is interested in the mathematical foundations of oceanography and physical sciences, and is excited to be a part of the lab for the summer. In her spare time, she likes to read, watch stand-up comedy, and go bowling.
